ByteCents exists for a simple reason: most tech buying advice is written as if everyone has an unlimited budget. Real people are choosing between a $79 pair of earbuds and a phone bill. This site is built around those decisions — what's actually worth your money when the budget is tight, and what's marketing fluff you can safely ignore.

What we cover

Budget-focused consumer tech, which we shorthand as "3C": computers, communications and consumer electronics. In practice that means phones, laptops and Chromebooks, earbuds and headphones, fitness bands and smartwatches, and renter-friendly smart-home gear. We also write about squeezing more life out of the devices you already own, because the cheapest upgrade is usually the one you don't buy.

How we make recommendations

Our guides are research-driven, not lab-driven. We combine manufacturer specifications, documented owner feedback, and category expertise to shortlist products that repeatedly come out ahead for specific situations. We don't claim to have run every product through a test bench, and we don't invent review scores. When a claim depends on a manufacturer's published specification — battery ratings, charging speeds, sensor counts — we say so.

Every pick includes explicit trade-offs. Nothing at this price point is perfect, and a guide that pretends otherwise isn't a guide, it's an ad.
